Magic: A woman pulls herself, in a new incarnation, out of a hat. (I’ve seen this trick often.)
Rachel Klausner, an old old friend, died a year ago at age 100. When she retired after many years as a union official, she decided to try her hand at art. The carving above was made from a sewing table left in the garbage outside a clothing manufacturer. It was her first attempt. She was 65. I still look at it in awe. And so began her second career, as a sculptor, which continued for more than thirty years.
